Dr Abigail Wicks
I'm Abby, a Chartered Child and Educational Psychologist and Fellow of the British Psychological Society, with over 15 years' experience supporting children, young people, families and schools.
I've always been fascinated by how children learn, develop and experience the world around them. Educational Psychology allows me to combine psychology, education and child development to help make sense of each child's individual strengths and needs. I find it incredibly rewarding to help parents and schools develop a deeper understanding of the children they support and to work together to identify practical ways to bring about meaningful change.
Throughout my career, I've worked across a range of local authority services, supporting children with diverse learning, developmental, social, emotional and behavioural needs. Alongside my independent practice, I currently work as an Associate Educational Psychologist for Oxfordshire County Council, where I support the training and supervision of Emotional Literacy Support Assistants (ELSAs). I also provide locum Educational Psychology services for Hampshire County Council and West Berkshire Council, contributing to Education, Health and Care (EHC) needs assessments.
My approach is strengths-based, collaborative and grounded in evidence. I believe that every child deserves to be understood as an individual. By developing a clear psychological understanding of each child's unique combination of strengths, needs and experiences, I work with parents and schools to create practical, personalised recommendations that can make a real difference in everyday life.
I hold a Doctorate in Educational and Child Psychology, a Master's degree in Clinical Psychology and a BSc (Hons) in Psychology. I am registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), a Chartered Fellow of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and hold an enhanced DBS certificate.
Outside of work, I'm a mum to two young boys, so I understand both the joys and the realities of family life. When I'm not working, you'll usually find me spending time with my family, out walking my dog Bruce, or enjoying everything that comes with raising two energetic boys.
